From BIM to digital twins – how digitalization benefits geotechnical engineering
Digitalization has led to significant changes in the planning and construction process. This has resulted in specific challenges for geotechnical engineering. The specialist model for building ground is based on selective, interpreted data and therefore has inherent uncertainties. Consequently, the best possible approximation must be achieved for further use. The aim is to discuss various ideas and impulses for future developments in addition to the current status quo of digitalization.
Univ.-Prof. Dr.-Ing. habil. Sascha Henke
Sascha Henke, Chair of Geotechnical Engineering at Helmut Schmidt University in Hamburg, brings extensive research and practical experience to the discussion. After training as a carpenter and cabinetmaker, he completed his studies in civil engineering and environmental technology at the Technical University of Hamburg-Harburg. There he earned his doctorate with honors and received his habilitation in the field of geotechnical engineering.
Since 2019, he has been teaching at Helmut Schmidt University and advising BBI Geo- und Umwelttechnik Ingenieurgesellschaft mbH. His professional career includes managing his own projects, running an engineering firm, and working in applied research.
As an active member of expert committees, including the DGGT's “Numerics in Geotechnical Engineering” working group and the International Society for Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering, he plays a key role in shaping the further development of the industry.
